In the East Coast, he was part of the formative years of the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club (VHTRC) and in the 90’s was handed the reins of the Bull Run Run 50 Miler as his first foray into race directing.

He took his lessons learned to California and in 2007 took over the San Diego 100, shaping it to his vision of an intimate experience for runners. He has now passed the torch, but is far from done with the sport.

A familiar face. Western States, Hardrock. He can be seen as a volunteer encouraging someone to find renewed strength, giving tips on the terrain, or pacing a runner – when he isn’t soaking it in with his own race bib. He thrives on the experience, not the result – and it shows as many can share an experience they’ve had with Scott.

“Very few people, including myself remember what time you finish the race or how many races you finished. You tend to reflect back in those moments where you are close to God if there’s God. It’s a wonderful feeling being out there alone but with others to share a unique experience.”

Many of us can hope to follow in Scotty’s footsteps and have a long career while sharing so many moments with other compatriots of this sport.
