Sorata Bolivia is a magical place in the cradle of the Andes. «La Perla Andina» (The Andean Pearl). Surrounding are the majestic peaks Illampu, 6,368 m (20,892 ft), and Janq’u Uma, 6,427 m (21,086 ft), creating a perfect scene for trail fans. Here is where Skyrunning Bolivia held SkyMarathon Sorata.
It was 5:35am when we arrived at 4,200m to follow the race. Illampu crowned the stage, the clouds beneath our feet.
We saw the first pack of runners, who were working their way to the next climb.
The red sunrise was brilliant in the alpine air. The sun warmed like a hug. From the mountain Illampu, an energy emanated that filled the soul.
The SkyMarathon began at 3:08am in Sorata at 2674m with fireworks in the main plaza. The small city came out to cheer, both residents and municipal leaders. The SkyMarathon had a total ascent of 2280m and the highest point was a little more than 4300m.
At the finish, a woman was congratulating incoming runners with confetti. Young residents helped with the medals. Many runners represented clubs from around the country and were supported by friends.
Sorata, a regional capital, was a city of historical importance. It was the main gateway of trade between the valley of the Yungas and the ‘altiplano’ and La Paz. Now it brings fans of hiking, trail and mountain biking. Be sure to try the local ice cream, «El Oso Goloso», especially the chirimoya flavor.
Visit the Gruta de San Pedro (caverns). About 6 km from Sorata, lies this hidden gem of caverns. Legend tells the Incas made these tunnels to hide the riches. They then flooded the caves to hide the treasure from colonial era raids,
Coinciding with the SkyMarathon, was also the 1st Altitude Trail Camp «Running to the Sky». Seminars included: physiology of distance runners, logistics and strategy for an ultra trail, proper technique with new technology and gear, sharing of experience and advice from the best trail runners of Bolivia. Also informative presentations on ITRA and Skyrunning.
